Underdressed and Underestimated

by Katie on December 29, 2012

I managed to squeeze in 7 miles yesterday after all. That was a lovely little Friday afternoon gift.
7 miles, 50 minutes, zero garmin, lots of fun

Another Friday gift was a last minute sitter and a lovely dinner out with the hubs and some friends. I feel like a night out is so much more enjoyable when there are three kids at home being watched by someone else.  I embrace every relaxing, martini drinking, tuna oscar eating moment.
I seriously underestimated the temperature this morning. big time running fail. As a rule, I should just never leave my house without my running gloves until about march. no matter how cold I don’t think it is. It was cold today. At a hand out the door to guesstimate the temp glance, a 20 degree morning can potentially feel more like a 30+ degree morning. which might cause an over zealous runner who doesn’t want a lot of “stuff” to forgo the gloves and opt for the “lighter” top layer. when, after about 2 minutes outside, reality hits and that 30+ degree feeling weather really is only about 20 degrees max.  if that.  no gloves.  light shirt. I think my eyeballs were starting to freeze. I made it ten miles and called it. As far as running goes, after today’s experience, I think I would prefer running on the hottest of hot days than being underdressed on a cold day.   I think another general rule is to dress for about 20 degrees warmer than it is if you are running for a decent amount of time. 20 + whatever the temp was this morning still would have warranted gloves – at least for the first few miles.  lesson learned.  this is what I went out in…
Lululemon from head to toe, besides the Brooks Pure Flow 2′s
those just make the whole running look happen
Love the headband – don’t leave home without it
The tights are some running leggings from last year – they are a bit thicker and are awesome.  No sagging and pulling up mid run. that’s never fun.

10 miles @ 7:40 pace. garmin assisted my run today.
To make up for not getting at least 13 miles like I wanted, I tried to squeeze in some strength…
5 minutes on stairmaster, 5 minutes strength/core work
Repeat 4 times
Rotating the stairmaster in with the strength somehow helps me get a better strength workout in. don’t know why. doesn’t make much sense, but it gets the strength done.
I will run home and cry about a freezing cold run, and I will then drink my iced coffee in the same weather
Heaven on earth. I will always drink my iced coffee. I don’t like hot coffee.
Another thing I underestimated was my supply of Vega Protein powder
I’m out. and that’s no good
This is my new favorite
I think I’ve mentioned it a time or two before.  it’s like dessert.
I have to cut it with my plantfusion, though, because it’s a bit pricey to be consumed on the daily, for my liking anyway. and I really like plantfusion. best of both worlds.
This necessitated a trip to whole foods
Get in the car kids, mama needs some protein!
Along with the rest of the town
If you want a practice in patience, take three children aged 2-6, to a New England whole foods, hours before a “snowstorm” hits.  when everyone realizes they have no food and need to stock up. on everything.
deep breathing, counting to ten and lots of open food got us through
And trucks. god forbid we leave the truck in the car. I need one more thing to keep track of.  and rain gear. Luke is always prepared for that rainy weather.
Alex and Luke are a handful in the store. alex wants everything she sees and Luke just turns into a ferocious beast most of the time.  Not sure where anna was at that moment, but she’s 5 now, so is basically a self sufficient adult and can take better care of herself than the other two. my little independent easy going kindergirl.  I kid. She was right next to me adding up the prices of the vegetables…“mom, 3 + 3 + 3 = 9!!”. so exciting, the life of a 5 year old. and I learn something new every day.
CHRISTMAS

I didn’t do a Christmas “recap”. It was Christmas. It was splendid and delightful and a lot of fun with my three little ones and then the whole family later on at my grandparents. Instead of talking about it, here’s a quick view in pictures of the days around Christmas…
Sunday best

Christmas eve birthday cake for Jesus, with a side of hair

Alex ate that half of the cake
Making cookies for Santa
By myself. I couldn’t recruit any kids to help me. what have I done wrong. I even offered them leftover cookie dough.
Setting booby traps for Santa
Watch out for the balls on the floor, Santa!

Christmas morning “mimosas”

With a side of black eye

Presents

For mama…

Alex and Ani charms….I keep the cards that come with them

For kiddos…

Christmas girls…

Post Christmas living room s’mores….

That should cover Christmas.

The predicted snow is now falling. the kids have already been in and out three times. We’ll see how many more times we can suit up, come in, de-robe, warm up, repeat. it’s a fun game.  naturally, snow goes with hot chocolate, so we have had an abundance of that as well. good snowy times.

Tomorrow I’ll post the bar recipe I mentioned in the last post. and we’ll see what else comes to mind between now an then.  for now, I have to get back to my cooking – spinach pizza roll, salmon burgers and pumpkin bread. here’s to hoping all the ingredients end up in the right dish.  My #1 is on the pumpkin bread detail…

I was really shooting for a 60 mile week this week.  which is kind of a stretch at this point. It would mean 13 miles tomorrow. We shall see.  I think I need to just make it happen.

Would you rather….

Be too hot or too cold?

Drink iced coffee or hot coffee for the rest of your life?

Play in the snow or play in the sand?

  1. Great workouts! And all the food/desserts look sooo yummy!
Looks like you and your lovely family enjoyed Christmas :)

    • We had a great christmas – still keeping our fingers crossed that no one gets this nasty flu that everyone seems to have! Happy new year!

  2. Be too cold and play in the snow! Always. I guess it’s the whole Alaska thing. Hot weather is my kryptonite.

  3. My daughter got a American Girl doll too. I’d rather be too cold as your cold first 2 miles and don’t really notice after that. I hate running in the heat bit rather run in shorts and a tech than tights. Still running in shorts as Zi refuse to break out tights before January.

    • Oh, those american girl dolls – It was only a matter of time before we took the plunge. Thankfully, almost a week later and they are still playing with them. I don’t love running in the tights either, but when it dips into the 20′s, I pull them out.
I hope your running is going well!

I would prefer to drink HOT tea. :)
In life I prefers to be too hot and play in the sand all the way! It is easier to find ways to feel comfortable in the heat.
When running, I rather be a little cold and let my run catch me up temp. wise. I am the queen of overdressing, and just like underdressing it’s not fun … Yes, I know I can take the layers off, but its no fun to run while trying to keep up with the load you have tied around your waist. ;)
Lastly, loved the cake with the side of hair. ;)

    • Yes, tea! That is one thing I LOVE about the arrival of cold weather – I get to break out the tea. I would agree, I think overdressing might be worse than underdressing – you end up carrying too much stuff.
      Happy New Year to you!!:)

  5. Hi Katie! I’m so jealous—I’ve been super sick since Xmas Eve (I know, rotten timing, right?) and have not been able to run or strength-train for a full week. Ugh! My kiddos have been on Xmas break and I’ve been sick the whole time. SO SAD. As for running in cold, I don’t even go by 10 or 20 degrees warmer and all that anymore; I sort of have temps memorized with what I have to wear at each. I’m in MN so it gets very, very cold. I def. need gloves from about 32 degrees down! And a (very) light running jacket over a long-sleeved top if it’s lower than that, too. Of course here plenty of times I am running in 5 degree weather come January. Brrr. Not pleasant. ;) Oh and by the way, love the after-Xmas S’mores idea. :)

    • Shannon, you poor thing! It seems everyone has gotten this sick, flu thing:( no fun! I am also learning what temps work with what clothing – the easiest way to do it. I have it down for racing, but am still figuring it out for training.
The smores were fun – a little toasty by the indoor fire, but fun!:)

  6. Hot coffee forever. I’m your antithesis: I’m the one with the steaming mug in 99% humidity and 98 degrees.
While you are posting recipes, I think you should throw spinach pizza roll up on the internets. I need some new ideas and that sounds yummy!

    • That makes me sweat thinking about drinking hot coffee in summer. I will throw that spinach bread one up along with the pumpkin bread and salmon. quite a trio of food going there:)

  7. I am very impressed that you run in the cold. It’s 35 degrees in Memphis right now and I’m trying to convince myself to get out there. I think I should invest in some warmer leggings, gloves, and maybe a hat first? ( I’m new at this!).
I am also very impressed by your dog’s self-control. My dogs would be begging for those s’mores, especially at eye-level! To them if it is food and on the floor, it’s up for grabs.
Thanks for the inspiration, by the way. If you can run 10+ miles in the New England cold, surely I can run 4 here, right???

    • 35 degrees is chilly! It’s all in my mood, really. If I don’t feel like being cold, there is no way I’m getting out there and I go for the treadmill. But, it also only takes a couple of outdoor cold runs for me to realize it’s not so bad. The winter is too long here for me not to go outside. Definitely invest in one good pair of each of those – comfort is key in cold weather!
You can totally do 4 chilly miles!;-)

Sounds like you might want to move to CA? I hate running in the heat, it wears my feet out, but 30 degrees is about perfect for me. This morning when I left for my run it was 8 degrees and by the time I got home it was 5, you might not be able to wear your cute outfits in Montana. I wear one layer on my legs and many on the rest of my body.
Is Garmin Connect working for you? I haven’t been able to download for two days.

    • Oh, CA would be so nice! And I wouldn’t have to give up my cute outfits;-)
I probably would not be outside in 5 degrees – don’t know how you do it!
I actually haven’t used garmin connect in a few days – I’ll have to check and see if it’s working for me.

Ha! I have a feeling you would go out in 5 degrees, be fast as hell and still look cute!

I’m from CA, but after 10+ yrs in Montana, I know how to get by out in the cold weather, I am always cold and just used to it, I guess.

I thought it got colder where you live? Sounds like the winter temps are that bad.

  9. I got a few of those bracelets for Christmas too! Love them! Your family is so cute. Lots like everyone had a great Christmas!!

  10. Gloves are a must for me, even when it’s raining/cold. My fingers are always, always cold. Hmmm. I’m a hot coffee gal. I’d rather be hot than cold. And I’d rather have the sand. (There’s a theme here.) We lived in AZ for four years. I loved every 120 degree minute of it. Even though I was born in NH I was not born to live here. Yet, here I am. Oh well. Life. By the way: I got the brooks pure connect, ran in them today and really like them a lot. Which brooks do you marathon in?

  11. Glad you said that about the gloves… I need to remember to wear mine more! Even though I’m only suffering though CA type cold, lol! Such a wimp :)
I’m really wanting to try Brooks Connects but keep hearing they are super narrow. What do you think?
I would definitely rather run in too cold than too hot, hot coffee for me, and I think I’d play in sand :)

  12. Stairmaster combined w/core work? That sounds like a workout on it’s own! I love core work, but really don’t like the stairmaster. My husband of all people loves the stairmaster. Go figure!

Looks like you had a wonderful Christmas! Love your bracelet and the charms.

  13. Iced coffee each and everyday! I mix it with protein powder and consider that my breakfast. I’ll have to try the Vega brand! Happy New Year!
